Glossary: User experience and usability research
Usability is the generic term for fitness for purpose and user friendliness.
Fitness for purpose describes the suitability of a product (software or hardware) for certain intended uses. This is to be achieved in an efficient, effective and satisfactory way. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published numerous ISO standards that stipulate certain quality requirements and quality characteristics for software products (ISO 9126) and software packages (ISO 12119).
User friendliness conveys the quality of the user experience when interacting with a website, software or a system. Intuitive and appropriate operation is described as user friendly. Usability can be evaluated using observation, surveys, usability tests and expert reviews. It is important to take into account here that each of these methods has its strengths and weaknesses with regard to representativeness, efficiency, validity and profitability.
The growing importance of online media has resulted in particular in the increased significance of web usability. This examines whether the website meets certain requirements for being user friendly. The main requirements include: perceptiveness, thoughtfulness, choice of colour, accessibility and legibility.
